DARN’S ‘A little Lift’ collection.

Developed after a trip to Mexico and formulated during quarantine, this collection features a colour palette pulled from the native flower Bougainvillea and Luis Barragan’s iconic home.

After returning to the UK I took a liking to British snakehead tulips spotted poking out of meadows in the spring, with their perfect check-like pattern which reminded me of jockey uniforms I am so fond of. Keeping me company during quarantine, parrot tulips also make an appearance as a two tone design named Robyn, and where home grown by florist Boldoxlip.

The Anna Scarf is named after Anna Lee Aldred 1921, the first woman in the United States to receive a jockey license - giving hope to other aspiring competitive female jockeys. After her years of competing as a jockey she became a daring trick rider in prestigious rodeos throught-out the West. Nothing stopped her until, at the the age of 80, she broke her hip, ouch! What a woman. Thank you Anna for leading the way.

The second in a series of seasonally-inspired 100% silk scarf designs, created in collaboration between DARN and London based SSAW Collective, the SSAW x DARN Summer Scarf features hand drawn peony’s studied by DARN founder Amelia from her own garden. Witnessing the flowers change in colour each day from red to pink, yellow to lime, this extraordinary experience has been translated across the colour-focused design in admiration to the quiet everyday beauty of English flora.

When we think of summer we often imagine bright bursts of colour, reflective of the heat and energy between June to August. Within spiritual anatomy yellow represents the solar plexus chakra colour, representing a single ray of light at the core of the body. Appreciated for its genderless identity, yellow is vibrant, full of energy and optimistic and speaks for itself; giving us the opportunity to experience summer all-year round.

Combining yellow and burnt orange with areas of negative space that highlight the hand drawn edges of four individual peony flowers, the SSAW x DARN Summer scarf printed was originally painted using oil pastels and yellow ink, before being translated into a digital print and applied to 100% silk. Measuring 47cm x 47, this scarf can be worn in a variety of different ways.

Decorated with hand drawn illustrations by DARN, created especially for SSAW, each scarf has been printed in the UK and is finished with a hand stitched edge, arriving wrapped in wax tissue paper stowed in a potato sac.

Sharing my love for one of my favourite places to meet friends, dine and refresh my creative spirits, the 100% silk Potager scarf is named after Potager Garden, located in Constantine, Cornwall. A space where a level of tranquillity and peace is nurtured between grounds, a large greenhouse and glasshouse café, I spent time immersing myself amongst the trees and flowers during the Spring of 2021 when new ideas and inspiration were dwindling and I was in need of uplifting. Having done just that, as a result of the self directed creative residency I created this striking colour focused print with polka dots combined with a new red variation of the Euryops Pectinatus; a plant native to South Africa. Measuring to 47 x 47cm, this square scarf can be tied around the neck, a ponytail or bun and the strap of your favourite everyday bag.

In February 2021 DARN met with London based collective SSAW to create a limited edition 100% silk scarf design in celebration of the changing seasons. As the first of a series of designs, we are pleased to say our ‘Spring’ edition is now ready to pre-order!

Inspired by the many hands that make up the strong community which has helped build SSAW, the Spring scarf reads:

‘Many hands sow many seeds, many hands live many lives, many hands make a community, many hands lift us.’

Released just in time for the SSAW one year anniversary, the design is a true example of slow fashion, which for both of us is so important to help encourage mindful consumption.

A 100% silk scarf to make you say ‘Yeeehaw!’, the Tonto features a collaborative screen print created by Ruth Blanke, a print student currently studying at the Royal College of Art, London. Working within printmaking, illustration and textile design, we feel super lucky to be able to showcase one of Ruth’s beautiful prints as part of the latest DARN collection, with an additional dash of colour for an extra spring in your step. Inspired by jockey riders as part of the DARN identity, an outlined ink illustration of horses has been printed in repeat to fill the square, whilst colour pop stripes and star shapes in orange, yellow and turquoise have been overlaid with a translucent effect. In celebration of her magic, the Tor scarf is named after Tor Harrison, my multifaceted twin, and features a two tone hand illustrated design presented against 100% silk. Having found one another at the start of 2021, we have since become creative, collaborative pals who love to work across many different mediums; such as photography, ceramics and textiles. As an homage to this, I created the textural blue tone print using a mixture of oil pastels, crayons, colouring pencils, inks and tea bags. Presenting alternative colour daisy flowers with a centralised yellow circle, which represents the sun, the border is inspired by traditional French mangle cloth. Each scarf is individually named after the first female jockey race players dedicated to their history-changing achievements. ‘A Little Lift’ is my second scarf launch and pays homage to the endless inspiration that can be found in colour, nature and pioneering women.

Robyn is named after Jockey Robyn Smith Astaire who in 1973 become the first female jockey to win a stake race in America. She later married the legendary dancing feet Fred Astaire in 1980.

As part of our ongoing DARN + Friends series, the Simon Bayliss 4 DARN collaborative 100% silk scarf design has been created by Simon Bayliss, an artist and music producer based at Porthmeor Studios in St Ives, Cornwall, UK.

Featuring a collage of imagery and ideas, inspired by the memorable works of English artist and sculptor Dame Barbara Hepworth. Distinctive Hepworth sculptural and coastal imagery has been interwoven amongst elements from Simon’s own work, including shapes from the surface of his ceramic pots and items that have been floating around his studio.

‘Puckered lips, pressed leaves, the frisson of a wave against rocks, echoed forms found in modernist abstract painting, and feathered lines of clay slip, like cake icing). I was asking myself `What would Babs Hepworth wear?’’
